It was the day after Christmas (to me, it was just one day less of my Winter break). I had just awaken from a nap after watching a basketball game when I noticed a surprising text from this guy that I used to "talk" to. For those of you who do not know what talking is, it is basically a stage in between dating and courtship. In this stage the people in the relationship basically get to know each other while there is no guarantee of a commitment. I no longer participate in this talking stage because I feel that it is too juvenile. That is another story.
Anyways, the conversation featured the common ridiculousness and crap that is associated with guys who are lonely. He made his loneliness too transparent when he text "Nothing. Laying down bored" at almost 1 A.M. Then, he had the audacity to tell me to call him. I entertained him by saying that I would call him the next day just to be nice. I was never going to call him. Using a woman with whom you barely communicate to fill that void when you're lonely is disgraceful, especially if it's late. The hour was not even appropriate. However, I know some girls who would have probably dialed his number, sparked conversation and willingly entertained his frivolousness.
That incident left me wondering, "Why do black men show no respect for black women?" "Bitch" and "Ho" are the main words used to describe women in rap songs, songs and words that are ironically, but not surprisingly, listened to and used by black women as terms of endearment. I'm sorry, but calling someone a dog will never be a greeting in my book. And, some women do act like dogs to their men. They jump when he says, "Jump", run when he say, "Run", and sits when he says, "Sit". Women still hold on to their ex even though he has stopped caring a long time ago. A child was killed because of an altercation between two baby mamas fighting over the same man. So, who is the real bitch? If women don't respect themselves, then why should a man respect us? If men see us acting like dogs, then how are they going to treat us?
It is time for black women to start respecting themselves.
To the guy who thought it was ok to text me and ask me to call him,
When you are feeling lonely at night and feel the urge to hear a woman's voice, DO NOT CALL ME. I'M NOT THAT GIRL.
