A week later, and I am still soaking it in.
Last week, LeBron James (my favorite person in the world) reiterated his greatness to me. I cried, I screamed, and sat back in amazement as he made history and solidified his career. I wrote about the analysis of it all for another website, but this is my personal testament to his greatness. Below is an open letter that expresses my sentiment.
Dear LeBron James,
Thank you. Thank you for making me love the game of basketball even more. I remember when I first saw videos from your high school games and thinking, "This dude is unreal". That same statement comes to my mind every time you get on the court. The way you handle the ball, control the court, and create seemingly difficult plays with your vision makes you , in my eyes, one of the greatest athletes I have ever seen. Allow me to just elaborate on how great you really are. You are 6'8", 250 lb., and able to assume any position on the court. So, even though your primary position is a small forward, the other four positions can be attributed to you as well. And it's not like you just play all of those positions from time to time, you dominate each one every time you are on the court. This characterizes your impeccable athleticism.
Growing up as the only child with a single mother, I saw my drive and dedication in you. I was able to see myself succeeding every time you accomplished a goal because of our similar backgrounds. I remember thinking, "If he can do it, then I can do it", every time you won a championship or accomplished a impossible feat.
Although I have been a fan since the beginning, my appreciation of your character and game started in 2010. Ironically, it was after you aired The Decision that I truly began to fathom how great you are. I only said ironic because critics say that The Decision was the biggest flaw of your career. But, to me, that moment was just the beginning of a new chapter. And in that chapter you were able to win back-to-back championships, collect back-to-back MVP awards, and make consecutive trips to the Finals. If that program was a huge flaw and was followed by that amount of success, I would do that any day.
But it is not solely what you have done on the court that defines your greatness. Fostering higher education for youth and building a media empire, reminds me why I adore you as an individual. Not only do you encourage children to do well in school, you ensure that they have the means to further their education through your I Promise program. Seeing you in Trainwreck and learning about your various television deals ( i.e. Survivor's Remorse) makes me proud and excited to predict that your greatness will transcend the basketball court.
Finally, seeing you win that championship last week meant everything to me. Last season felt like an emotional rollercoaster with all of the criticism and hate directed toward you and the Cavaliers. But to finish it off by not only surviving through the adversity, but by doing the impossible gave me that feeling I always get after riding a fun rollercoaster-----I wanted to do it again and again and again.
Thus, in retrospect, I thank you, LeBron James. Not just for being unstoppable on the court, but showing a young girl, who also dealt with the struggles of having a single mom, that she can be similarly unstoppable as she chases her dreams.
Sincerely,
DeAsia Paige, one of your biggest fans
